On Saturday, September 24th, thousands of volunteers from around the world participated in the fourth annual Green Apple Day of Service.
The event offers parents, teachers, students, companies, and local organizations the opportunity to improve school environments in their community. Since 2013, GWWO has teamed up with Hampden’s Independence School Local 1 High to participate in this important event. Independence School is a project based, experiential learning high school with a focus on environmental studies & natural resource management. The service projects GWWO performed, alongside several other volunteers and students, included cleaning and weeding the site to harvest watermelons, squash, scallions, and kale, installing rainwater collection barrels in order to reuse the water for gardening and other purposes, and creating a bee enclosure for a honeybee colony. These updates serve to improve their learning environment, acting as an outdoor classroom and contributing to their studies.
