Yesterday the Towson University community gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the $42.5M expansion and renovation of TU’s “bigger, better” Burdick Hall, the campus’ recreation center.
The 94,000-SF expansion provides the campus with a state-of-the art facility commensurate with Towson’s peer institutions, establishes a highly visible identity for TU’s Campus Recreation Services, strengthens opportunities for campus connectivity, encourages student interaction, and fosters a sense of community in the heart of campus.
Distributed over three levels, the expansion includes multiple gymnasiums, an expanded fitness center, multi-activity courts, areas for group fitness, an indoor running track, climbing center, a 25-yard swimming pool, fitness plazas, outdoor courts, locker rooms, spectator galleries, café kitchen with seating area, member services, administrative spaces, facility operations, and multiple storage spaces. Additionally, specific renovations were made to improve the overall appearance and functionality of the building. GWWO served as Associate Architect with HOK as Prime Architect. The project is designed to achieve a minimum of LEED Silver certification.
