The Brafferton Named Outstanding Preservation Project

The Brafferton Named Outstanding Preservation Project

GWWO is pleased to announce that Preservation Virginia has presented GWWO with the 2014 Gabriella Page Preservation Award for The Brafferton rehabilitation.

The annual award recognizes projects that exemplify the use of preservation standards and bring an outstanding building into appropriate contemporary use. Built in 1723, The Brafferton is the second oldest American collegiate building that remains in active and continuous use. Despite the fact that The Brafferton serves as the offices of the President and Provost for the College of William & Mary, and hosted dignitaries to its rooms on an almost daily basis, the building’s materials and systems were failing, and damage to the historic fabric was increasing. GWWO was chosen to undertaken the rehabilitation that would bring the building up to code, insert all new systems into the historic fabric, while also restoring the first and second floors back to their condition of the early 1930s, and most importantly, all without compromising the historicity of the building.
