Constructed in 1968, the former Faulkner Ridge Elementary School stood vacant before an extensive renovation that will transform the facility to meet the needs of Pre-K students.

A new, bright metal-clad exterior welcomes students with a sprinkling of playfully colored interlaid blocks that provide a sense of identity and aid in wayfinding. The entry, formerly non-descript and cavernous, is now located on the opposite side allowing for separate car and bus loops and is highlighted by a bright blue canopy and secure entry vestibule.

Inside, the educational environment will be improved by enclosing the open pod configuration into acoustically separated classrooms and the infusion of natural light through new windows and skylights. Long corridors feature collaboration and pinup spaces for out-of-classroom learning, while also visually breaking up the space for these young learners. Classrooms are designed to support multiple teaching zones, from a cozy seating area to activity tables, all with clear views to the main teaching station.

Improvements to the building’s systems, including a highly-insulated envelope and roof, efficient mechanical systems, and LED lighting with occupancy sensors, will help to conserve resources and improve the interior environment.
