Groundbreaking Ceremony of Baltimore City's Cahill Fitness & Wellness Center

Groundbreaking Ceremony of Baltimore City's Cahill Fitness & Wellness Center

This morning, Baltimore City Rec & Parks broke ground on the new $18M, 32,000-SF Cahill Fitness & Wellness Center which will replace the existing recreation center.

Unique for a city wellness center, the facility is located within the most extensive park in Baltimore—Gwynns Falls/Leakin Park—which includes over 1,200 acres of contiguous parkland and multiple trail heads to the 15-mile public trail system. The new facility is designed to encourage engagement with its wooded setting. It’s concept relates directly to a walk in the woods, with discovery around each corner. The design’s exterior vertical wood siding, complimentary of its context and harvested from the part itself, continues inside the building, blurring the perception of interior and exterior spaces. Similarly, program space extends out beyond large expanses of glass for both visual connection to the site and outdoor programming.

Designed for users of all ages, the new facility will include an activity room, fitness studio, gymnasium, indoor pool, and an outdoor splash pad. Also included, and distinctive to this center, will be a performance space; an essential feature requested by the community. Site amenities will also include both a new basketball court and children’s “nature play” area. The facility is scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 and will be the first fitness and wellness center in Baltimore City.
