GWWO cares deeply about the communities in which we live and work.

Our efforts to make Baltimore a better place extend beyond our designs to a firm-wide volunteering initiative, GWWOrks. This committee-led initiative plans and organizes opportunities for staff to employ their diverse talents to serve our local communities. In 2022, members of the firm made an impact through 450+ volunteer hours, multiple donation drives, and firm-matched monetary donations.

This year, the firm supported non-profit organizations across the region, including:

University of Maryland Children’s Hospital

Through a firm-wide drive in February, five boxes of children’s books were delivered to the hospital through a collection run by Baltimore’s Ivy Bookshop.

Baltimore Animal Rescue & Care Shelter (BARCS)

In April, team members visited BARCS, Maryland’s largest animal shelter and pet adoption center, to walk and socialize with the dogs, which will help them when transitioning to a forever home.

CivicWorks

In May, 15 GWWOrks volunteers worked with the Community Lot Team at CivicWorks to plant trees and shrubs and work on other beautifying efforts in a local community garden at 700 E Preston Street.

The Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools

This May, volunteers helped with planning and day-of logistics for the organization’s first-ever Let’s Play Ball fundraiser. In August, GWWO sponsored a Tools for Schools supply drive to help stock the shelves at the Foundation's "Exchangaree," which provides teachers with needed school supplies and resources for their classrooms.

Irvine Nature Center

In September, Irvine Nature Center hosted GWWO for a firm-wide day of service. With the strength of 60 behind us, we were able to design and execute multiple improvements to the outdoor classroom, including construction of a new mud kitchen, two art easels, kid-size tables from old wire spools, and a music station along with the painting of four picnic tables, re-mulching of the entire area, and repairs to a large mud kitchen and slate slabs for chalk drawings.

Maryland Food Bank

GWWOers packed 12 pallets, or 960 holiday meal boxes, at the Maryland Food Bank’s annual Pack to Give Back event in November.

Friends of Patterson Park

Team members gathered to help decorate Baltimore’s iconic Patterson Park Observatory in preparation for the annual Winter Lights community celebration.

Baltimore Family Alliance (BFA)

This month, team members will spread holiday cheer by delivering gifts for 60 children at two Baltimore City schools, Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle School and New Song Academy, through the BFA’s Adopt a Family Program.

We are excited about what was accomplished through GWWorks in 2022 and look forward to continuing our tradition of giving and doing our part to support the missions of these and other essential local organizations in 2023.
